What is the rationale behind Circle J Horsemanship's extensive use of groundwork? In our experience, virtually all horses that come to us for additional training or due to owner issues, have deficiencies in their groundwork. We firmly believe that groundwork is crucial for a horse's development. If a horse does not listen on the ground, it will not listen under saddle. Is your horse overly assertive or intrusive? We teach horses to respect boundaries on the ground. When your horse becomes startled during a ride, how do you initially react? Is your instinct to seize the reins and pull back?

Do you find yourself struggling to load your horse onto a float, or do you feel apprehensive about the farrier's visits? The good news is that many issues can be resolved through the implementation of proper groundwork techniques. Groundwork is a multifaceted process that involves more than just a brief lunging session for your horse. The process of starting a horse has undergone significant transformations in recent years. The traditional approach of 'breaking' a horse by saddling it up and allowing it to buck until it becomes submissive is no longer employed. Instead, starting a horse involves establishing clear communication and trust through consistent groundwork, ensuring a seamless transition to riding. A horseman's primary goal is to avoid instilling fear in their horse, which can lead to bucking under saddle.
